The Boulder Age

Oz replaced the dirt with stone and stacked unusual world rules together. The players answered by building a shrine, writing clan rules and developing an unreasonable affection for boulders. There was plenty of stone available for the work.

MenacingDirt was suspicious of the new world. It was 10 July 2022, and after three weeks of Shadow Paint, Ozzaria had found a different way to make ordinary terrain strange. Dirt had become stone. Trees stood where the ground no longer looked right, enemies were plentiful, and several secret-seed effects had been combined on top of Master Mode. Liby entered enthusiastically; understanding what they had entered would take longer.

Oz explained the mixture: Drunk World, For the Worthy, anniversary and Not the Bees effects, along with a doubled spawn rate. He also supplied an explanation for stray liquid problems. During preparation, he had accidentally set the entire world to lava. Whatever had been corrected before launch, players could still encounter unexpected water, lava and obsidian. The terrain contained evidence of how it had been made.

Some resources were unusually plentiful. Tin and lead had been replaced with gold and platinum. Wood, meanwhile, mattered enough for Bufong to urge everyone to collect trees. Rich ore did not solve every basic need. Players had to learn which parts of their normal starting routine still worked in a world assembled from so many competing rules.

Out of that environment came the Boulder Clan. Menacing joined, Gronun warned people not to touch its divine tower, and somebody built a boulder cannon. A familiar Terraria hazard had become the centre of a small institution. Where earlier groups had claimed a biome or established a shared base, this one had a shrine to defend.

Its rules were unexpectedly thorough. Members were told not to grief, not to be mean to one another, and to love both ordinary and cactus boulders. There were instructions for loading and using the weapons when invaders arrived. The mixture of sensible community standards and complete devotion to a rolling rock made the clan easy to recognise. Saeed asked what it was and received very little help from Chems, who treated the subject as a secret.

Other groups continued beyond the joke. Late in the season, Night explained that Exe had taken over the Forest clan. The names and leadership could change while the idea of belonging to something carried on. Around those arrangements, JaceTLM, Valkyrie, Liby, Gronun and the other regulars farmed equipment, traded and prepared for the next permitted fight.

There was time to prepare. Wall of Flesh remained disabled through a substantial opening stretch, and Hardmode arrived eight days into the season. When it did, KDY found something to appreciate in the unusual world: the available Hardmode ores. A map that had made so many early tasks uncomfortable could occasionally give them a useful advantage.

Gronun was especially interested in when Duke Fishron would become available. He asked Oz, pressed for a day, and got permission before the mechanical bosses. As in the previous season, players could take on a dangerous fight early and bring its rewards to the more ordinary progression ahead. By 24 July, Duke and all three mechanical bosses were on the tracker, while arenas were being prepared for later encounters.

Not every ambition involved Terraria's bosses. The economy ranks offered more permissions and conveniences, with benefits people could plan to use across future worlds. Gronun reached Cosmic, joining established holders such as Liby and Menacing. Elsewhere, players complained about being poor or looked for another sale. The money and the prefixes had their own pace, only partly connected to whether the current map was ready for Plantera.

Sometimes people wanted to leave progression behind for a while. Oz opened a Spleef server and called imanewbie over to join. The boulder shrine and the minigame came from the same practical situation: experienced players needed things to do during the gaps. They could build an arena for tomorrow's boss, build something absurd for their friends, or go and play something else together.

Near the end, the remaining question was Moon Lord. Players asked for him to be enabled, and the final night brought the usual confusion over summons and whether he had spawned or despawned. The tracker eventually settled the matter by listing Lunar Boss. Bufong still needed reminding that this was the name the tracker used for Moon Lord. Even after eleven seasons, the interface could make a completed fight sound missing.

The reset on 31 July was delayed into the afternoon. Night returned to visit the world before it ended, and Oz apologised as he gave the final countdown. When the replacement map opened, it looked much closer to ordinary Terraria. Then Night noticed the slimes moving too fast. The stone world and its tower were gone, but some of Oz's modifications had made the journey. The players would need their old habits of asking questions almost immediately.
