Master Mode Mayhem
Master Mode was meant to make the new world last. What tested the players most was losing work to griefing and rollbacks, then deciding to keep building anyway. Around them, Oz began adding rewards and a currency that would give them something to carry into the next season.
KDY looked at the new world's difficulty and predicted Moon Lord in ten minutes. Season 4 had opened on 20 March 2022, and Normal Mode did not seem likely to hold up a community that had just spent the previous morning summoning half the game's bosses. The answer was Master Mode. It would give everyone more reason to prepare before moving forward, provided they could be persuaded to wait.
At first, there were more immediate concerns. While Oz was asleep, a player identified in chat as aqwwa attacked the world. Protected areas resisted the damage, but elsewhere players needed help. Once again, a remarkably well-timed backup gave Oz a way to restore what had been lost. The map could be repaired. The gap in staff coverage was harder to solve with a file.
Aurko was active during those hours and became Mod Lite. Later, when Oz could not deal with another incident himself, Ludaw received temporary moderation access so someone online could remove griefers. Ludaw's first reaction was to ask how he had become a moderator. Responsibilities were finding people in the middle of ordinary play, because the server needed somebody there rather than a name on a distant staff list.
A worse setback followed on 22 March. Players reported more damage and pointed towards JackIsJesus. Oz prepared a backup and told everyone to move valuables into their inventories before he loaded it. This one would take the world back nine hours. Anything built during that stretch, and anything left in the wrong chest, was at risk of disappearing with the damaged map.
Ludaw said the rollback had put him off. It was an understandable response to being asked to repeat work that had already been done properly once. Drako helped protect the public crafting room, and Oz moved towards much more frequent backups, including the database. Ten-minute world saves could not stop someone trying to ruin an evening, but they could make that evening less expensive to recover.
Protection brought problems of its own. Players found that innocent actions could upset the anti-cheat; at one point, Ludaw warned others not to place or remove wires. Oz kept adjusting the systems while everyone tried to use them. The world was simultaneously a place to play and a place where the machinery supporting that play was being repaired.
There were more cheerful additions. Voting acquired a visible rank and rewards. Italia Troller combined OG and Voter, while KDY accumulated enough labels to resemble several different members of staff at once. Exe gained extra health through votes. For players who returned regularly, the server was beginning to recognise time spent helping it grow, alongside the familiar evidence of progress in their inventories.
Then Oz introduced the economy plugin and began imagining ranks people could buy. Jotaro checked his balance and discovered nineteen coins, which Oz promptly treated as a fortune. Clam admired the system and announced his intention to break its economy. Oz invited him to try. Within days, Ludaw had hundreds of coins and was looking for something to spend them on. A new kind of collecting had begun before anyone quite knew how large it would become.
Master Mode, meanwhile, was doing the job requested of it. Players questioned how they were supposed to survive certain fights and asked for Expert next time. Progression still advanced, and KDY still had to tell Italia not to rush, but getting there demanded more preparation than the original Normal Mode world would have done. New equipment mattered when ordinary mistakes were so costly.
By the night of 30 March, the group around Clam, Diamond and Mabh was fighting Moon Lord. Another summon could interrupt a greeting; someone arriving to say hello had to be told what was happening overhead. The following morning, Lunar Boss appeared on the tracker. Oz checked the news, and the players kept summoning him. The boss that had justified making everything harder was becoming something they could fight again for the sake of it.
Ludaw asked whether they could reset early for the weekend. Oz considered it, then realised he was late for school. By the afternoon of 1 April, attention had returned to the new world, and after more preparation the invitation to join finally came. Season 4's buildings and difficult fights were behind them. The ranks, rewards and economy would give the next world a different starting point, even when its players were back in basic gear.
That evening, That New Guy was already asking people to slow down. They could not all keep up, and it was only the first day. For everything Oz had added and everything the players had learned, finding a pace that suited everyone remained unfinished work.
