The Server Gets Loud

Arl was tired of pylons, so he started building a teleporter hub. Around that practical little ambition, Ozzaria filled with new voices, shared preparations and more players than Oz was used to seeing online at once.

Two days after the reset, Oz checked the player list and found seventeen people online. Among the familiar names were KDY, Exe, Clam, PurpleCloud and That New Guy, surrounded by players who were becoming regulars in their own right. The world that opened on 1 April 2022 was getting crowded. Any quiet job could now become a conversation involving half the server.

Arl had a job that would benefit most of them. He wanted a teleporter hub because using pylons had become a nuisance. The difficulty was paying for enough wire. Before the project was far along, he was asking for donations and admitting that it had already left him broke. Travel across the map could be easier for everyone, if he could afford to finish connecting it.

The hub grew above spawn. The dungeon gained a link, and later the boss arena did too. Players asking how to reach somewhere could be directed towards a piece of infrastructure somebody else had taken the trouble to build. Arl was also preparing potions and helping people get ready for fights. His contribution to progression included the journey there and the supplies in everyone's pockets.

Bald had his own preoccupations. He collected mob statues with an enthusiasm other players were quick to notice, and became steadily more established among the regulars. On 7 April, Oz promoted him to Trusted. The moment passed through the same chat that contained trading, questions and a complaint about an itchy arm. A change in someone's place on the server did not always arrive with much ceremony.

There was more staff work to share as well. PurpleCloud became a Moderator. A world with fifteen or seventeen people playing at once could not rely on the same informal coverage as a handful of friends. The anti-cheat caught suspicious actions in the background, but players still needed help, and there were still visitors willing to announce that they could bypass the rules. The growing server made both kinds of conversation more frequent.

For newcomers, even getting started required learning a small vocabulary. Registration, login, voting, rewards, the shop and the Eco balance all had their own commands. Exe explained the systems often enough that Oz joked about his greetings becoming an instruction manual. Coins and the Voter rank, so new in the previous season, were already part of what people expected Ozzaria to offer.

Master Mode was familiar too, though agreement about how quickly to play it remained elusive. KDY spent the opening hours trying to keep the group from rushing Eater of Worlds. Later, Bald reported that it had died accidentally, while Exe described it despawning near protected spawn. Even the question of whether someone had rushed a boss could become an argument about what the game had actually done.

Wall of Flesh received more deliberate preparation. Players discussed when to fight it, and Arl invited everyone to collect supplies at spawn and request potions. When the battle succeeded, the celebration was followed almost immediately by Bald turning his attention to fishing. Hardmode brought a new set of useful things to collect, and the shared preparations had done what they were supposed to do: get the group into reach of them.

PurpleCloud returned to find the world already in Hardmode and pointed out how recently it had reset. KDY shared the frustration. With this many experienced players online, somebody was always ready for another boss, even while someone else was still catching up. The larger community made organising a fight easier and agreeing to postpone one much harder.

By 7 April, the tracker was deep into Hardmode. Two days later, KDY announced that they had beaten the game. Moon Lord had fallen, and subsequent fights quickly became routine enough for Bald to complain that he was getting bored. Arl, meanwhile, was looking forward to a fresh world where ordinary enemies would no longer have hundreds of health. After all the effort spent becoming stronger, the beginning was starting to sound appealing again.

The next reset was scheduled for 10 April. Almost at the last moment, War proposed a theme: a feudal era, with kingdoms and territory. Oz protested that three minutes before reset was a little late to introduce an entire political system. The proposal survived the bad timing. While the old world was being closed, players were already imagining how to divide the next one.

The new server needed some database attention before everyone could settle in. Then the crowd returned, and Clam checked a balance of 440 coins. The teleporter hub would have to be built again; the wire and routes belonged to the world they had left. But the money was still there. Alongside the people who knew one another, something else was now crossing the boundary between seasons.
