The Skyblock Experiment

Twenty players arrived to share a world of floating islands. There was less room, less spare material and much more reason to cooperate. Even the Dumpster had trouble finding a permanent place in the sky.

The first instruction was to collect the dirt. At noon on 23 April 2022, players entered Ozzaria's Skyblock world and began working out what they could use, where they could live and how careful they needed to be with the little ground available. JustSomeWeebs liked what he saw. Oz was delighted that the event was finally happening. Others were already choosing islands and opening the starting chests.

Those chests needed to be shared. A normal map offered another cave to explore when somebody had taken the good loot; an island could be emptied before the next player arrived. Oz reminded everyone to divide the equipment. Cooperation was a sensible survival strategy when the alternative was arguing over a finite patch of resources while standing above a long drop.

There was an early correction to make. KDY discovered that the world was on Normal Mode, and the reaction spread through chat. Oz changed it to Master. Then the player count reached twenty, a milestone he was excited enough to announce, having raised the limit to thirty for the event. More people had turned up than ever, just as the map had given them less space to work with.

Fishing became central to the routine. If an island no longer held what a player needed, there was no guarantee that walking farther would solve the problem. Crates and the shop offered ways around that shortage. To a newcomer asking what happened on the server, the answer could be reduced to surviving, suffering and fishing. It was an unfairly bleak description of a world whose players were clearly finding plenty else to do, but the fishing advice was useful.

KDY tried to re-establish the Dumpster. Before long, someone had taken the chests themselves. Later, a player with several full chests of unwanted equipment wanted to donate it and found there was nowhere to put it. The old habit of leaving things for strangers still existed; the furniture required to support that generosity had proved less durable.

Other shared projects had more success. Gronun7 built a soul farm and described it as a public AFK machine. The value of turning a difficult resource into something repeatable was especially obvious here. A person who finished a farm could spare the next arrival hours of frustration. Gronun became Trusted, though his own response was to question how trustworthy he really was.

The previous season's politics followed everyone upward. JustSomeWeebs announced an empire and a group of sky pirates. He and Exe also worked on an assassination chamber, a contraption with several phases that eventually proved capable of alarming its own creators. Scarcity had encouraged practical engineering, but it had not persuaded everyone to spend their building materials responsibly.

Oz had taken a firmer hand with the bosses. Eater of Worlds and Wall of Flesh were disabled until their appointed stages, preventing the quickest players from settling the whole season while others were still fishing for supplies. Later, when Plantera became available, arguments immediately shifted to Golem. Oz repeated that Golem was tomorrow. Preparation could happen now; the fight would have to wait.

Moderation needed its own shared space. KDY, Primal God, Bufong and the other staff could not all be online in Terraria whenever help was needed, so Oz linked staff chat between the game and Discord. The first night had already brought reports of cheating and unexpected snow around the map. Being able to reach somebody outside the game mattered more as the event drew a larger crowd.

Despite the restricted terrain and paced progression, the players reached the same final fight as every previous season. Moon Lord fell and was summoned again. Velocit later claimed they had beaten him twenty times; the exact count mattered less than the familiar change in conversation. The question was no longer whether this strange world could be completed. It was what everyone wanted to finish before leaving it.

On the last morning, someone was racing to assemble Zenith before the reset. Enard kept asking when the world would change. Oz confirmed noon on 8 May, then spent the final moments fixing the quest command. As the old server closed, there were still small jobs being finished on both sides of the game.

The replacement world had ordinary land. Oz asked whether it felt good to be back, and the relief needed little explanation after fifteen days on islands. When a player checked whether Eco Coins had reset, he explained that the balance belonged to their server wallet and travelled with them. They could leave the fishing spots, narrow routes and improvised farms behind without losing everything they had earned. This time, there would also be room to spread out.
